Susan Laing
I am an epidemiologist and, although having four sons, have managed (just about) to juggle work and home and continue to work part-time
After a PhD in medicine studying peripheral vascular disease I ran a cohort study of 23, 000 subjects with type I diabetes at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and later at the Institute of Cancer Research. I then went back to LSHTM and studied for the MSc in Epidemiology before working in West Africa.
I have recently finished a cohort study of birth outcomes at a health centre in The Gambia. The aim of the study was to establish a baseline measure of neonatal deaths and stillbirths at the end of the era of the Millennium Development Goals against which to measure future improvements. I am also examining risk factors for low birthweight. In addition to my current studies I am planning a screening programme for CVD risk factors in The Gambia
I am based at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and teach on the MSc in Global Health.
In addition we provide some financial support to postgraduate Newnham students from developing countries.
