Karin Horowitz
I came to Newnham as an affiliated student, following an undergraduate degree at Yale where I studied English literature. After my two-year part II, I wasn’t ready to leave as I’d fallen in love with Newnham and Cambridge. So I stayed on to do a PhD. At the end of my PhD I realised, contrary to expectations, I didn’t want to pursue an academic career. So what next?
I joined an educational publishing company which also focused on publishing materials to enable students to make careers choices. This gave me an opportunity to interview graduates working across a wide range of disciplines, from law to the performing arts, and write up stories of typical days in their lives. I supported companies in marketing their opportunities to graduates and interviewed graduates on their career hopes and aspirations. This interest in careers has remained a mainstay in my professional life.
I am a leadership and well-being coach and consultant. Having worked with senior leaders in many professions as well as government, I now work mainly within the Education sector and provide leadership and well-being support to head teachers and their teams. I am also a Yoga practitioner and teacher.
I have played a key role in developing Newnham’s life skills offerings for students. I also facilitate workshops for students on the skills needed in navigating a career including interviewing and cv review. I’m always happy to have a chat with Newnham students.
