Doctor, tutor, medical journalist, and author.

After graduating in medicine from Newnham, I followed a winding path which eventually led me to become what people call a ‘media doctor’. 

As a hospital doctor, I specialised in rheumatology, but the arrival of three sons in quick succession nudged me towards general practice, a speciality which offered more clinical variety as well as flexible ways of working.

Alongside this, I developed my passion for putting complex ideas into simple words, writing for titles as diverse as The Sun and The Lancet, and appearing on TV and radio to comment on breaking health stories.

My string of non-fiction books, most of them on child health and parenting, was inspired by my hands-on experience of wrangling three boys under three.

I enjoy teaching medical students at Imperial College and I have co-authored two textbooks of general practice with my colleagues from Imperial, one of them winning a BMA award.  

In the last few years, I have finally spent time writing contemporary fiction.  I am now working on my third novel.

Based in both London and Cambridge, I am now an Associate Fellow of Newnham.

I was also honoured to become president of the Guild of Health Writers. I’m an honorary consultant in family medicine to the Twins & Multiple Births Association, a trustee of Action on Pre-Eclampsia, and an ambassador for Lucy Air Ambulance for Children.

I can offer Newnhamites past and present advice on medical careers generally, on media work, and on work-life balance.
