Amna Boheim

I studied Land Economy with little idea of what I wanted to after graduating. I have to say that when I arrived at Cambridge I was completely overwhelmed. Coming from Scarborough, I felt like a country bumpkin – incredibly green and a little lost. Everyone seemed confident, astute, with a host of internships and experience behind them, reeling off a host of firms I’d never heard of. For the best part of my first year I felt pretty inadequate, but then something inside my head clicked and I relaxed a little and started to enjoy myself. The great thing about Land Economy was its breadth. It gave me a foundation in both Law and Economics as well as Geography and during my final year at Newnham, I decided to go into investment banking. 

I joined the analyst programme at Goldman Sachs in the summer of 1998, spending eleven years in the Investment Management Division where I was made a Managing Director. My last role at the firm was as head of the Nordic Sales effort where we were were one of the largest revenue-generating teams in Europe. 

I left Goldman Sachs to join the hedge fund, Moore Capital. While it was a great experience, I did begin to lose interest and I felt I wasn’t learning anything new. So I left, had children (three in total) and I decided to do something completely different. I enrolled on Faber Academy’s six-month Writing a Novel course. I self-published The Silent Children in 2015 which won a silver medal for best Thriller in the Independent Publisher Awards in the US in 2016. I have also written a blog for Dawn News, the leading English language newspaper in Pakistan. 

Currently, I’m a trustee at a local charity, Oasis which provides vital support to vulnerable families and children. I also lead their fundraising, marketing and volunteer efforts.
