Mary Wareing
I’m a strategy consultant, and I specialise in operations and organisation topics. My clients include large corporations, private equity firms, publicly listed companies, and public sector organisations in the UK and Europe. I help them develop and implement transformation initiatives which address issues like customer experience, operational excellence, financial performance and capability building. Some of my project highlights have included three months in a quarry in North Yorkshire, six weeks in a rail depot in London and six months in a giant greenhouse on the Rhine.
I read Engineering at Newnham, which I fitted in between flying with the University Air Squadron and rowing with NCBC. After graduating, I joined the Royal Air Force as an Engineer Officer, and I was lucky enough to work on a Tornado F3 squadron as well as on Merlin and Chinook support helicopters - while managing to keep up my rowing as Captain of the RAF Ladies’ Rowing Club.
I studied for my MBA at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania on a Thouron scholarship, which I recommend highly to anyone thinking of postgraduate study in any field at UPenn. My strategy consulting career started in 2002 with an MBA internship at McKinsey and, apart from a brief foray into local government and a corporate role at Arla Foods, I’ve been enjoying it ever since - now as a freelancer.
I live in Sheffield with my husband and twin boys, and I make the most of living within twenty minutes’ drive of the Peak District National Park.
I’m happy to talk about careers in engineering, the military, aviation, strategy consulting, and the joys and challenges of being self-employed, as well as career development more generally. I can also offer advice on postgraduate study in the US, including admissions procedures and funding sources, and on options for MBA programmes.
